CLAT UG paper has five sections – English Language, Current Affairs, including GK, Legal Reasoning, Logical Reasoning, and Quantitative Techniques. CLAT PG paper will be based on common subjects of 3-year LLBand 5-year LLB courses and covers topics like Constitutional law, Family law, Law of Torts, Law of Contracts, etc. CLAT 2021 will be a comprehension-based test with MCQ-type questions only (for CLAT PG), the essay section has been dropped form the test structure. CLAT 2022 Syllabus – An Introduction
Last year, the consortium made certain changes in the syllabus of CLAT UG and PG.
Comprehension-based questions that test the reading, critical thinking, and analytical skills of students were introduced. Less emphasis was given to rote learning.
CLAT Syllabus 2022 – Undergraduate
The CLAT UG paper will have FIVE sections:

CLAT 2022 Syllabus for English language
The English language section of CLAT 2021 will include 28-32 questions; note each question will be of 1 mark. The section will have four to five comprehension passages of about 450 words each. The content of the passages will be derived from contemporary or historically significant fiction and non-fiction writing. Each passage will be followed by four to five objective-type questions. The English section of CLAT 2021 will test the reading ability of students.

The Current Affairs, including General Knowledge, section will include around 35-39 questions, which is around 25% weightage of the question paper. The passages will be drawn from the topics like news, legal editorials, and opinions, journalistic sources, non-fiction writing.

CLAT 2022 Syllabus for Legal Reasoning
The Legal Reasoning section of the CLAT 2022 question paper will contribute around 35-39 questions, or carry 25% weightage. Each question will be of 1 mark; -1/4 mark for an incorrect answer. Questions will be asked from 450-word passages, which will be drawn from fact situations or scenarios involving legal matters, public policy questions, or moral philosophical inquiries.
CLAT 2022 Legal Reasoning Section
- Total weightage: 25%
- Type of questions asked: Objective-type questions based on 450-word passages
- Source material: Fact situations or scenarios involving legal matters, public policy questions, or moral philosophical inquiries.
- Description: No prior knowledge is required to answer these questions.
- Skills required: Candidates may benefit if they have a general awareness of contemporary legal and moral issues.
CLAT 2022 Syllabus for Logical Reasoning
This section will carry 20% weightage and contribute 28-32 questions. There will be around four to five comprehension passages of around 300-words each. Each question will be of 1 mark, while for an incorrect response, 0.25 marks will be deducted.

- Type of questions asked: Passage-based (300-word long) objective questions
- Skill tested: Recognize argument, its premises, and conclusions; analyze patterns of reasoning; make inferences; draw relationships and analogies, contradictions and equivalence, etc
- Marking scheme: Each question carries 1 mark, while there is a negative marking of 1/4 mark for an incorrect answer.
CLAT 2022 Syllabus for Quantitative Techniques
The quantitative section will be of Class 10th level. There will be questions from short sets of facts or propositions, graphs, or other textual, pictorial, or diagrammatic representations of numerical information. Candidates will be required to derive information from such facts, diagrams, passages, graphs, or other representations and apply the mathematical formulas and operations to answer the questions. Overall, there will be around 13-17 questions, each carrying 1 mark.
Topics to be studied: Ratios and proportions, basic algebra, mensuration, and statistical estimation, percentage, loss, and profit, etc.
CLAT 2021 Quantitative section

- Question type: Objective questions
- Description: The section will include short sets of facts or propositions, graphs, or other textual, pictorial, or diagrammatic representations of numerical information, followed by a series of questions.

CLAT PG 2022 Syllabus
The PG question paper will be divided into two sections; the objective section and the descriptive section. It may be noted that the descriptive section has been restored again. The descriptive section, which includes two essays, was last year removed from the syllabus give the exam was conducted in online mode.
CLAT PG – Objective section
The PG-CLAT 2022 objective section will be a comprehension-based test in which extracts from primary legal materials such as important court decisions in various fields of law, statutes, or regulations will be provided. Each comprehension passage will be followed by a series of multiple-choice questions that will test the following skills:
- Read and understand legal issues given in the passage, and identify arguments and viewpoints.
- Awareness of issues discussed in the passage. Legal aspects, facts and knowledge related to the topic discussed.
- Awareness of the judgment or statute on which the passage is based on.
- Summarising the passage and ability to apply the knowledge of law discussed in the passage.
CLAT PG Syllabus – Descriptive Section
In this section, candidates will be asked to write TWO essays. The word count of each essay should not be more than 800 words. In this section, candidates will be required to demonstrate the following abilities.
- Awareness of legal, factual, and philosophical issues arising out of the given essay (or question).
- Ability to structure your answer, and clearly set out various arguments and perspectives related to the topic set out in the questions, and draw conclusions.
CLAT LLM Syllabus 2022 – Topics to Study

CLAT Exam Pattern 2022
The consortium has also revised its exam pattern which tells about the test structure and other related rules. As per the CLAT test pattern, the exam will be held in offline mode and two hours will be given to the candidates to answer all the questions. OMR sheets will be used to record the responses of the candidates. The details of the exam pattern are mentioned below.
